Dinosaur & other Prehistoric Animal facts: Ichthyosaurs

What are Ichthyosaurs?

Ichthyosaurs were amazing marine reptiles that lived in the oceans millions of years ago, around the same time as the dinosaurs. They had streamlined bodies similar to modern dolphins, which made them excellent swimmers. Ichthyosaurs varied in size and diet but were generally known for their long snouts and large eyes, perfect for spotting prey in the deep sea.

Notable Ichthyosaurs

Here are some notable Ichthyosaurs:

Shonisaurus

Shonisaurus was one of the largest ichthyosaurs, measuring up to 15 metres in length. It had a long, slender body and a small head, likely feeding on fish and squid.

Ophthalmosaurus

Ophthalmosaurus was about 6 metres long and had enormous eyes, some of the largest relative to body size of any animal. These eyes helped it see in the dark depths of the ocean where it hunted fish and small cephalopods.

Ichthyosaurus

Ichthyosaurus gave its name to the entire group and was around 3 metres long. It had a pointed snout and many sharp teeth, ideal for catching swift-moving fish.

Temnodontosaurus

Temnodontosaurus was a large ichthyosaur, reaching lengths of over 10 metres. It had powerful jaws and teeth, perfect for hunting larger prey including other marine reptiles.

Ichthyosaur Features

  • Streamlined Bodies: Ichthyosaurs had sleek, dolphin-like bodies that allowed them to swim quickly.
  • Large Eyes: Many ichthyosaurs had big eyes, helping them see in the dark, deep waters.
  • Varied Diets: They ate a variety of sea creatures, from small fish and squid to larger marine reptiles.
  • Sharp Teeth: Ichthyosaurs had sharp teeth, ideal for catching and eating their prey.
  • Live Birth: Unlike many reptiles, ichthyosaurs gave birth to live young in the water.
