Giganotosaurus was a colossal dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 99.6 to 95 million years ago. This fearsome carnivore is primarily known from fossils found in Argentina, South America.

 

 

Size:

 

Giganotosaurus was one of the largest meat-eating dinosaurs, measuring about 12-13 meters (39-43 feet) in length and weighing between 4.2 to 13.8 tons. Its skull alone was about 1.53 to 1.80 meters (5.0 to 5.9 feet) long.

 

 

Diet:

 

Giganotosaurus was a carnivore, preying on large herbivorous dinosaurs. It likely hunted in packs to take down massive prey like Argentinosaurus.

 

 

Habitat:

 

This dinosaur thrived in the diverse ecosystems of Cretaceous South America, including forests and floodplains.

 

 

Interesting Facts:

 

  • Giganotosaurus means "giant southern lizard."
  • It was larger than the famous Tyrannosaurus rex.
